A Cognitive Semantic Approach to Teaching Prepositions.
Boers, Frank; Demecheleer, Murielle
ELT Journal, v52 n3 p197-204 Jul 1998
Prepositions have different but related senses. In cognitive semantics, figurative senses are extended from spatial senses through conceptual metaphors. Pedagogically, it is useful to draw learners' attention to those aspects of a preposition's spatial sense that are especially relevant for its metaphorization. Ways in which cognitive semantic analyses of prepositions could be used to anticipate comprehension problems are discussed. (Author/MSE)
