Pay Attention to the Phrasal Structures: Going beyond T-Units--A Response to Weiwei Yang
Biber, Douglas; Gray, Bethany; Poonpon, Kornwipa
TESOL Quarterly: A Journal for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages and of Standard English as a Second Dialect, v47 n1 p192-201 Mar 2013
WeiWei Yang, in her forum piece, raises two main criticisms of the authors' "TQ" article on grammatical complexity: "The study the authors conducted [1] is not capable of answering development-related questions and [2] is mathematically questionable" (Yang, 2013, p. 190). In addition, Yang's article has a third goal that is not explicitly identified: to defend the reliance on dependent clauses and T-units as the primary measure of writing development. In the following discussion, the authors address all three points. They explain how their research findings are directly relevant to the study of writing development, and they take up the mathematical and linguistic bases of their methodological approach, showing how they are superior to T-unit-based analyses. However, they also believe that Yang has missed the main point of their article, focusing on secondary issues while disregarding the implications of their empirical research findings. For this reason, the authors begin their response with a brief summary of their original article.
