This introductory chapter addresses the question of whether the field of instructional development is a science, an art, or some combination of the two. It is suggested that the field is not merely a collection of flow charts, diagrams, and techniques, but a unified whole, to be understood first in terms of its underlying research foundation, conceptual structure, and fundamental tools and models. The implicit existence of a paradigm for the field is suggested, although it is noted that many in the field do not believe that such a paradigm exists. Finally, the current state and future of the field, both as a profession and as a business, are considered. (5 references) (Author/EW)
