This article briefly identifies seven distance education case study projects completed for the Office of Technology Assessment as part of their November 1989 report, "Linking for Learning: A New Course for Education" (ED 310 765). The paper focuses on strengths and weaknesses associated with telecommunicated distance education delivery systems and on current issues related to distance education practice in the United States. Numerous advantages and disadvantages of teaching via satellite are identified, as are advantages and disadvantages of teaching via microcomputer audiographics, and via two-way full motion television. Among some of the current issues identified in distance education delivery are materials transfer, classroom management, remote site visits by teachers, levels of interaction, selection of teachers, technical breakdowns, teacher training, scheduling, class size, and local control.
