Data on the major fields chosen by students enrolled for their third year of undergraduate study in 1973 and 1974 were collected from 482 institutions. The survey was designed to produce information useful in forecasting trends in career choice, shifts in graduate school enrollments, and available college-educated manpower. The findings indicate a two percent gain in undergraduate enrollment, with an overall greater increase in the private sector than in the public sector. By institutional type, public universities and private four-year colleges registered the greatest growth in junior-year enrollments. Data by field of study were available for approximately 80 percent of all junior year students. Over three-fifths of all students who had declared majors by the fall of their junior year were concentrated in four of the 12 major fields, as follows: social sciences (20 percent); business and management (15 percent); arts and humanities (14 percent); and education (13 percent).
