College Impact on Student Attitudes and Behavior.
Astin, Alexander W.
The American Council on Education has been conducting a longitudinal research study to assess the impact of different college environments on the student's development and to provide a source of current, readily available, descriptive information about the student population. The findings presented in this paper are based on the followup of the 1967 freshmen, conducted in 1968 after the completion of their freshmen year in college. The data was obtained from 26,806 freshmen in 178 institutions. The institutions were divided into 9 types, and this paper is primarily concerned with presenting a comparative analysis of the impact of each of these institutional types on the student's attitudes, gradepoint average, and values during the first year in college.
