Paperless Braille Reading: A Preliminary Research Report.
Bourgeois, M.; Ashcroft, S. C.
The study involving three blind elementary school, six blind high school, and four blind college students was designed to establish oral reading rates and oral reading error rates for Ss reading conventional braille volumes and brailled materials with the Digi-cassette, an electronic braille reading and writing machine. Data suggested several points: (1) reading with the Digi-cassette is slower than reading conventional braille; (2) the similarity in reading error rates between the two reading modes suggests that the mechanical features of the Digi-cassette and the problem of "broken" words at the end of a line, are not causing significant numbers of errors to occur; and (3) low oral reading rates with the Digi-cassette may be accounted for by lack of experience with the instrument, by modification in personal reading style, or by increased memory load for past words or letters due to the nature of the 12-cell braille line.
