Evaluating Teacher Inservice Workshops by Comparing Participant Reactions with Participant Products. Workshop Evaluation Made Simple, Practical, and Cost Effective.
Alvir, Howard P.
Fifty-one teachers with three or more years of teaching experience participated in an inservice workshop on the development of course content, setting of student performance objectives, and selection of instructional methods. The participants completed questionnaires and check lists which were contrasted with parallel instruments completed by 75 observers. Simple t tests were then performed to measure the significance of the difference between participant self-evaluations and observer expert judgments. When participants evaluated their own products and submitted product samples to expert judges, no significant differences were found between the evaluations made by participants and those of observers. However, participant self-evaluations made in other circumstances were found to be significantly inaccurate when compared to expert observer judgments. The participant evaluation form, the observer evaluation form, the participant product sample form, the third party product sample evaluation, and instructions for interpreting the forms are included.
