Mentoring Matters: Linking with a Professional Network
Liebenberg, Emily
English Journal, v99 n6 p86-88 Jul 2010
In this article, the author describes her induction years in high school teaching, reporting the frustration in lacking a suitably matched mentor, and her determination to attend to her own professional growth. Her story reveals characteristics common among "stayers," those who continue beyond their induction years and thrive for a long time as teachers of English. Those characteristics include a resiliency to continue in the face of some difficult challenges, an awareness of resources and instructional options, and a proactive commitment to connect with other professionals to foster growth.
