Administrative Perspectives on International Partnerships
Amey, Marilyn J.
New Directions for Higher Education, n150 p57-67 Sum 2010
In the race to be internationally present, colleges and universities seek increasing ways to partner across boundaries. Sometimes, arrangements are loose configurations including ways in which individual student or faculty study-abroad activities have traditionally been initiated; sometimes, they are more integrally connected to core institutional missions such as branch campuses. Four international partnerships including both instructional and non-instructional examples are briefly highlighted in this chapter. Short summaries of the collaborations are examined through the lens of the partnership model and focus on administrative and/or faculty issues that arise with the activities, followed by a summary of observations on the specific cases noted in this article that could be applied to international partnerships in general. Each example is unique in its intent, the ways in which it is evolving, and how it contributes to the life of the department; each began largely under the auspices of an individual's faculty interest; and each provides lessons for partners, faculty members, and administrators.
