Working with Jewish Undergraduates
Blumenfeld, Warren J.; Klein, Jacqueline R.
New Directions for Student Services, n125 p33-38 Spr 2009
The Jewish student population has received little attention on campuses and has indicated their disappointment with college administrators and faculty who do not understand their identity. Jewish undergraduates face many identity issues related to being Jewish, yet they have limited opportunities to learn about the impact of religion on their identity. There are limited opportunities on most campuses for Jewish students to learn about the historical and current issues related to their identities. In this chapter, the authors present information on Jewish student identity and the historical context of Jews in the United States. The authors also discuss the challenges Jewish students face on American college campuses, and offer strategies for faculty and administrators to use when working with Jewish undergraduates.
