When a Child Has Difficulty Moving from Place to Place
Greenspan, Stanley I.
Early Childhood Today (J3), v21 n5 p16-19 Mar 2007
In this article, the author responds to a teacher's request for an advice on how to help a 5-year-old child in her class who has difficulty moving from place to place. The author states that the child has a problem on processing information and sensations that have to do with what he sees. This is called "visual-spatial processing" or "visual-spatial thinking," which has to do with all the steps that are typically used, from seeing something to making sense out of what one sees, to being able to remember it, and to being able to problem-solve through that knowledge. When a child has difficulty figuring out the relationships between things he sees, the author suggests to strengthen the child's capacity and ability. The key is to practice visual-spatial problem solving with highly motivating situations and make sure to divide the task into smaller tasks so that he can be successful with each one. If it is too hard for him, make it even a little simpler, until he can expect success in navigating space in order to achieve his goals. (Contains 2 resources.)
