Navigating Student-Initiated Negotiations: Strategies for Physical Educators
Kelsey McEntyre; Zachary Wahl-Alexander
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v96 n1 p8-14 2025
Within any educational setting, teacher-student interactions undoubtedly influence the learning environment, as they can increase or decrease instructional quality. As such, these exchanges can be framed as negotiations, which are interactions between teachers and students that are aimed at changing part(s) of a lesson. While teacher-student negotiation can take place within any educational setting, the dynamic physical education environment presents a unique set of challenges. Through the lens of the classroom ecology paradigm, this article identifies types of negotiations that occur within physical education and provides strategies for teachers to reduce negative and increase positive negotiations for the purpose of fostering a positive learning environment and maintain lesson trajectory.
