Applying Liberatory Consciousness to Action Research
Maati Wafford
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v36 n1 p21-23 2024
Action research is an essential practice that aligns deeply with how Montessori tasks educators with being scientists, saints, and servants. These three roles anchor educators' understanding and efforts as they seek to incorporate action research into Montessori pedagogy. In this article, the author offers a way to incorporate critical reflection into action research by using Barbara J. Love's elements of liberatory consciousness as a guide. It is only through working through four successive steps--awareness, analysis, action, and accountability/allyship--that educators can challenge learned patterns of thinking and behavior and move toward real social justice.
