The Early Childhood Education program at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) prepares more than 600 students each year to be educators in early childhood (birth-Grade 2) classrooms as teaching assistants or to continue their education in 4-year institutions. In March 2020, as COVID-19 devastated urban neighborhoods, a journey was embarked on to create a supportive classroom setting in a virtual environment, recognizing that students were coping with numerous stressors, including grief, illness, income loss, food and housing insecurity, daycare and school closings, and inadequate access to technology. Students engaged in a series of virtual learning experiences designed to capture the joy and energy of art, inspire them to find their creativity and playfulness, and create a sense of community in a remote learning environment. This article presents what was learned from this experience, finding assets in a time of profound loss that will impact teaching approaches and enrich the understanding of teaching artists and art educators who work alongside generalist early childhood educators in community partnerships and teaching artist residencies in schools.
