Equitably Sustainable: Minneapolis's Green Zones
Bousu, Mollie
Geography Teacher, v17 n4 p151-155 2020
The Minneapolis Green Zone Initiative was created in 2016 with the goal of "improving health and supporting economic development using environmentally conscious efforts in communities that face the cumulative effects of environmental pollution, as well as social, political and economic vulnerability" (Green Zone Initiative 2019). Two separate zones, each with their own community advisory bodies, were established through extensive analysis of the spatial patterns of various population and environmental indicators of vulnerability. The advisory bodies of the Northern and Southside Green Zones work on initiatives related to seven goal areas. These goals focus on sustainability and healthy living, but at the core is a commitment to equity and the prevention of gentrification and displacement of residents (Muellman 2019b). This lesson helps students think through the decisions that went into creating these zones and how the zones could be used to tackle the challenges of urban sustainability and equity. Although this lesson focuses on Minneapolis, it could be adapted to other US cities and elsewhere in the world.
