Maps and satellite images can be used effectively to identify and compare settlement patterns. Spatial cognition and interpretation are important to further map literacy (Larangeira and Van der Merwe 2016). Although Apartheid ended in 1994 in South Africa, the legacy of this "separate development" system is still very noticeable in South African cities. Using Google Earth, these separate settlements can be identified and compared. In this lesson plan, students use Google Earth to explore the spatial influence of apartheid on the South African city. The lesson is targeted toward intermediate or high school students and extends the length of one 60-minute session or to the teacher's discretion. Information on the history of urban settlement in South Africa, key issues in South African cities, identifying township areas, opening instructions, developing the lesson, and concluding the lesson is provided. A lesson worksheet is also included.
