Building Assessment Tools Aligned with Grade-Level Outcomes
Martin, Caryl; Horton, Mel L.; Tarr, Susan J.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v86 n7 p28-34 2015
This article focuses on the development of assessment tools to enhance the acquisition of the grade-level outcomes developed in the K-12 curriculum. Physical education is one of the few educational programs that does not have a multitude of available state and national tests to measure student progress. This distinction has been both a strength and weakness of the field. Educators have the freedom to find inventive, engaging ways to increase student knowledge and participation without constraints on how they teach the content; however, creative assessments produce inherent challenges. With limited assessment resources available to physical educators, along with the nuances specific to individual programs and curricula, it is essential for educators to be able to easily and quickly develop quality tools to assist with student learning and program evaluations. This article addresses the criteria needed to develop checklists and rubrics, and provides suggestions on tools that could effectively and efficiently meet the intended objectives. Examples of tools that address student learning outcomes specific to the K-12 grade-level outcomes are also provided.
