Teaching Reading Comprehension to Students in Grades 4-6
Weih, Timothy G.
Online Submission
Reading comprehension refers to elementary children's levels of understandings of written text. Building on Bloom's Taxonomy (Bloom, Engelhart, Furst, Hill, & Krathwohl, 1956), children can understand text at various levels including the literal, inferential, application, and evaluation. When teachers build on the levels of reading comprehension together with discussion, elementary students become engaged in conversations related to their understandings, which serve to increase their speaking proficiency in the English language as well as enhance their social construction of knowledge (Vygotsky, 1978).
