Learning-Driven Schools: A Practical Guide for Teachers and Principals
Beers, Barry
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
While there are lots of books that explain the teaching process--how to plan a lesson, what kinds of activities to use--this is a book that starts with the real crux of the matter: how a teacher's students actually learn. A veteran teacher and principal explores the research on learning and describes how teachers can work backwards from learning goals to ensure all students reach their maximum potential. Included in the book's advice are specific remedies for better teaching, such as: (1) Why teachers should create "learner plans" rather than lesson plans; (2) Which teaching strategies make the best use of the research on how people learn; and (3) How to use simple classroom assessments to identify students' knowledge and alter one's instruction to meet their needs. Then, discover how to extend this learning-driven approach beyond the classroom to ensure that teacher supervision and professional development programs emphasize learner outcomes. Following an introduction, this book presents the following chapters: (1) The Study of Learning; (2) Planning for Learning; (3) Teaching for Learning; (4) Assessing for Learning; (5) Learner Observations; (6) Learning Conversations; (7) Teacher Learning; (8) Building a Learning Community; and (9) Making It Happen. Appended are: (1) Sample Learner Plan for Mathematics; (2) Sample Learner Plan for Physical Education; (3) Sample Unit Plan for Social Studies; (4) Sample Percents Unit Plan for Mathematics; and (5) Sample Fractions Unit Plan for Mathematics. Also included are: References; About the Author; Related ASCD Resources: Learning-Driven Schools; and An ASCD Study Guide for Learning-Driven Schools: A Practical Guide for Teachers and Principals.
