Clinical Supervision and Teacher Development: Preservice and Inservice Applications. Fifth Edition.
Acheson, Keith A.; Gall, Meredith Damien
This book about the clinical supervision of teachers emphasizes the techniques of clinical supervision: ways to work with teachers to help them improve their classroom teaching. The book is intended to serve both as a practical hands-on guide for the inservice principal and school district personnel who supervise teachers, and as a textbook for preservice teachers and administrators, who one day might supervise teachers. Along with tips for the practitioner, it contains notes to the instructor of the material in the text. The book is organized into four units. Unit 1 provides background, including the process, goals, and models of clinical supervision, necessary for understanding techniques of clinical supervision. Unit 2 introduces the supervisory roles and uses of clinical supervision that occur in actual practice, offering an overview and objectives. Units 3 and 4 describe specific techniques for improving one's interpersonal communication skills, conducting feedback conferences, observing classroom teachers, collecting observation data, and other practices. The book contains a number of useful charts, figures, and tables. The final chapter contains checklists, rating scales, and timeline coding procedures. (Contains a name index and a subject index.)
