In multigrade instruction, children of at least a 2-year grade span and diverse ability levels are grouped in a single classroom and share experiences involving intellectual, academic, and social skills. "The Multigrade Classroom" is a seven-book series that provides an overview of current research on multigrade instruction, identifies key issues teachers face in a multigrade setting, and provides a set of resource guides for multigrade teachers. Book 2 offers guidelines for classroom organization that will accommodate the multiple activities occurring in the multigrade classroom. An activity centers approach to classroom design is outlined that designates classroom areas for specific purposes. General considerations during planning include the level of activity and noise likely to occur during different learning activities, use of visual barriers to define activity centers, placement of teacher and student resources, traffic patterns, age and physical size differences among students, and storage of student belongings. The teacher must be prepared to explain the room arrangement to students and parents. A list of questions clarifies classroom design principles and aspects of a particular classroom plan. Figures illustrate a comprehensive classroom layout and three self-contained classrooms organized in different ways. Presented in workbook fashion, a three-step design process involves describing the present classroom, identifying specific learning activities that will take place, and drawing the final plan.
