Understanding Taxes. [Teacher's Resource Package. Revised.]
Internal Revenue Service (Dept. of Treasury), Washington, DC.
This redesigned version of a high school curriculum on understanding taxes contains 6 units with 12 lessons. The set of video, print, and software lessons is designed to teach students about the United States tax system through integrating the materials in a number of different classrooms: history, economics, math, consumer education, government, civics, business education. A chart indicates classes for primary and secondary usage. The table of contents shows which seven lessons have video and which one lesson has software components. Most lessons are designed to be taught in a single class hour. Each unit lesson contains some or all of the following: purpose; objectives; required materials; key terms; and suggestions for teaching activities organized in three parts: opening, developing, and concluding the lesson. In these sections, the left-hand column presents actual teaching suggestions--questions and instructions for activities; the right-hand column contains possible student responses. An extension section suggests activities for further research. Reproducible handouts are provided. The six units cover these topics: understanding one's role as a taxpayer, understanding tax forms, understanding state and local taxes, understanding how taxes evolve, understanding fairness issues, and understanding the impact of taxes. Other contents are as follows: glossary of tax terms, user's manual for diskettes, and addresses and telephone numbers for the Internal Revenue Service Taxpayer Education Coordinators, with ordering information.
