This guide is designed to help teachers and parents evaluate and choose computer software for young children in their classrooms or homes. Chapter one of the guide contains software purchasing tips and criteria, along with descriptions of programs receiving the High/Scope Early Childhood Software Award of Excellence. Chapter two contains a guide to interpreting the software descriptions and ratings that are presented in chapter three, a summary of software information, and a listing of software titles. Chapter three provides an alphabetical listing of 515 programs. Each entry in the list contains the program's name, producer, price, suggested age range for users, computer compatibility, a short description, and a sample graphics interface. Each entry is also rated on user friendliness, educational value, instructional design, and overall quality. Chapter four describes the evaluation process used to rate the programs. Six appendixes provide lists of: (1) early childhood software producers; (2) other useful sources of information; (3) software by topic; (4) software by computer brand; (5) software no longer available; and (6) a glossary of terms.
