Shanley, Mark, Comp.; Hearns, Roland, Comp.
This 59-item annotated bibliography covers suggested reading material published between 1956 and 1991 to assist college faculty and administrators in promoting first year success for college freshmen. The bibliography is divided into seven sections of resource materials. Section 1 contains suggested readings on both objective research on the attitudes and characteristics of first-year students, as well as incoming student's views of college. Section 2 contains material which reviews college and university programs designed to meet first-year student needs. Section 3 lists publications that review the extended orientation/college survival course. Section 4 reviews the most widely used texts and source materials for freshman orientation seminars. Section 5 presents research material that assessed the impact of specific campus programs and activities concerning the freshman year. Section 6 presents information on research projects that explored the impact of the college experience, the importance of student involvement, and the essential match between student and institution. Finally, Section 7 presents reports of the issues and implications of the freshman year and the recommendations for changes in undergraduate and freshman education that are now being implemented.
