Attachment Based Therapeutic Preschool Curriculum: Program for Emotionally Handicapped and Severely Emotionally Disturbed Students.
Meckel, Stephen A.; And Others
The Therapeutic Preschool Program serves 3- and 4-year-old children of average intelligence who are diagnosed as having emotional and/or behavioral problems. The primary goal of the program is to provide a framework for teaching the social, emotional, and cognitive skills necessary for eventually mainstreaming the children into a regular education program. A structured program is offered, incorporating a variety of therapeutic modalities such as behavior modification, individual and group therapy, and developmental play therapy. The program is staffed by a mental health therapist, an exceptional student education teacher, and an instructional aide. This curriculum guide describes the theoretical and research basis for the program, program goals and objectives, learning characteristics of children aged 3-5, the affective curriculum, a plan to prevent behavior problems, sample daily home note, active learning and the use of learning centers, use of community resources and field trips, and parent involvement. A list of approximately 60 suggested readings is appended. (JDD)
