Dental Health Education Curriculum Guide for Use With Head Start Children and Families.

This teaching guide for a dental health curriculum for children in the Head Start Program contains lesson plans for the following areas: (1) introduction to the dental health program; (2) visiting the dentist; (3) awareness of the mouth; (4) the important functions of the mouth; (5) the importance of keeping teeth and gums clean; (6) toothbrushing; (7) the importance of fluoride and sealants; (8) wise food choices for a healthy mouth; (9) keeping teeth safe; and (10) reinforcement activities for dental health. Each lesson contains the following sections: (1) purpose of the lesson; (2) materials needed; (3) background information for the teacher; (4) starting the lesson; (5) classroom activities; (6) lesson review; and (7) a letter for parents. A resource list of organizations to contact for more information about dental health is included, as well as home visit activites to involve parents and information on caring for the disabled child's dental health.
