Collaborations for Literacy. An Intergenerational Reading Project. Tutor's Handbook.
Staryos, Michelle M.; Winig, Laura
This handbook was written by college students at Boston University (Massachusetts) about their experiences as adult literacy tutors in a program called "Collaborations for Literacy." The project teaches adults to improve their reading skills through reading to and with a child, using the "Reading Rainbow" television series and its featured books as motivation and as the basis for cooperative adult-child reading activities. This book is organized in two parts, each containing three sections. The first part provides an overview of the project. The first section describes the problem of adult illiteracy and the second section describes recruitment and training of college work-study tutors and the tutors' first experiences. In the third section, the steps involved in tutoring are discussed and tips about how to conduct an effective session are provided. This section includes a log written by a tutor about his experiences. In the second part of the book, many teaching strategies for tutoring are provided. The first section contains techniques to teach reading using any print material, although a few are specific to the "Reading Rainbow" curriculum. The second section explains the purpose of the tutor-adult-child tutoring sessions and presents sample lesson plans and a list of reading activities that can be used with an adult and child. The third section provides comprehension questions for 20 of the "Reading Rainbow" featured books. This section can be used by the tutor to check the adult's and child's comprehension of the story.
