A survey involving 1,142 Nashville, Tennessee, area businesses was conducted to assess current employment interest and future labor demands for entry-level jobs. Major objectives of the project component, part of a three-pronged effort to improve vocational education, were (1) to provide for greater involvement by business and industry in analyzing the extent to which vocational programs offered in metropolitan Nashville are current, relevant, and responsive to local human power needs and (2) to use the findings of the project survey and of related efforts to improve local vocational education programs. According to the results of the survey, "service occupations" is the occupational category in which the most entry-level job openings, due to expansion and replacement, could be expected to occur between 1982 and 1985. Of the top 25 jobs out of 6,541 job titles with the most projected openings, 14 of the top jobs were within the service occupations category. Several jobs in the sales and clerical category and two job titles belonging to the crafts and kindred occupations were also part of the top 25 jobs with the most projected openings. Employers contributed numerous comments and suggestions for improving vocational programs. The occupational projections will be used with related data to form a picture of prospective supply-demand conditions. Recommendations were made to improve the vocational education programs to meet employment needs. (Author/KC)
