Spaull, Andrew; And Others
This monograph by four authors examines the structure and role of teacher unions in the three Australian states of New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, and analyzes the rapidly changing shape of teacher unionism at the federal level. After an introduction by Andrew Spaull, Robert White, in chapter 2, examines developments within the teaching force in New South Wales, focusing on "Occupational Divisions and Educational Change,""Union Strategy and the Question of Unity," and "State Workers in the 'New Depression'." The third chapter, by Kate Nash and Andrew Spaull, deals with Victorian teacher unionism; topic headings include "Union Pattern,""Union Government,""Teacher Strikes,""Union Polices 1977-82,""Electoral Intervention in 1982 and 1985,""Relations with the Labor Government 1982-85," and "A New Industrial Relations System." Chapter 4, by Adrian Vicary, focuses on the South Australian Institute of Teachers, the second largest affiliate of the South Australian Trades and Labor Council. Topics include "Teachers and the Class Structure,""Growth and Development of SAIT,""Professionalism and Industrial Strategy,""The Politics of Consensus,""Towards Unionism," and "SAIT in the 1980s." The last chapter, by Andrew Spaull, examines the role of Federal Teacher's Organizations, highlighting "Development of the Australian Teacher's Federation,""The ATF in the 1980s,""The Australian Teacher's Union 1983-85," and the "ATU and Australian Teachers."
