Since its founding in 1983, The Jefferson Foundation has engaged increasing numbers of Americans in study and discussion of the U.S. Constitution. Through participation in Jefferson Meetings on the Constitution citizens will come to a fuller understanding of how the Constitution was made, why it designed the national government the way it did, and how it structures political life. Setting up a community meeting to examine and reassess the institutions of American government and the Constitution is the focus of this four part document. Part 1 defines what a Jefferson Meeting is and gives a rationale for developing such a meeting. Part 2, planning, discusses the topics of leadership, spreading the word, delegate selection, facilities, the program, expenses, and fund-raising. Part 3 presents a step-by-step guide to the Jefferson Meeting on the Constitution. The roles include a plenary chairperson, discussion leaders, floor managers, and delegates. The basic steps include setting the agenda, the opening session, the issue committee meeting, and the plenary session. Part 4 summarizes the conference proceedings in a step-by-step fashion. The document concludes with a publications order form, a sample brochure, and an application form. (RSL)
