Sign Language: A Communication System.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of Curriculum Development.
The manual is intended as a course resource to help hearing secondary students learn to communicate with deaf peers or family members. The total communication approach is described and reasons for its use advanced. An introductory section explains the philosophy, general goals, and program objectives of the course. Ten lesson plans are then presented, many with readings, on the following topics: do's and don'ts for hearing persons, sound levels, city names, history of sign language, deaf education methods, limericks, organizations serving the deaf, numbers, the TTY (Teletypewriter Terminal), rehabilitation, and music activities. Each of the lesson plans includes a listing of objectives, rationale, teaching information, materials, review and practice procedures, motivating activities, instructional activities, culminating activities, evaluation, and assignment and follow-up ideas.
