A study, the fourth in a series of annual surveys, examined the characteristics of new students enrolled in the Department of Adult Education at the University of the District of Columbia from the summer of 1982 through the spring of 1983. To obtain a profile of the students' personal backgrounds, educational objectives, and career goals, the researcher collected data from the existing application for admission form for graduate students at the university and from a project-developed questionnaire. Based on data concerning 23 of the 25 new students, the researcher found that the students are predominately black and female with a median age of 32 years. Most of them are first generation college students. Thirty-nine percent of them are highly involved in one or more organizations; 12 are in jobs related to adult education; and most earn between $10,000 and $19,999 annually. A majority of the respondents chose the field of adult education because they felt it would afford them the opportunity to help others, and 74 percent of them plan to pursue a doctoral degree.
