Thomas, R. S. D. – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1987
Differences in cognitive structure are approached through consideration of cartesian and non-cartesian knowing. Figuration and configuration are described as two layers of cartesian knowing leading to the third layer, the cognitive structure. Knowing in general is then discussed, with comments on learning in another culture, Botswana. (MNS)

Kramer, Pamela E.; Lehman, Sheila – Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, 1990
Finds that computer and mathematics avoidance among women is the result of attitudes, expectations, and discrimination. Present-day creative computing relies upon skills not limited to those with a math and science orientation, and should prove a rewarding occupation to women. (DM)

Greenwood, Jay – Mathematics Teacher, 1984
Math anxiety affects both sexes, and is not the cause of imbalance in mathematical professions. Attempts to broaden perceptions of mathematics deal only with the symptoms of math anxiety. The principal cause is the methodology used to teach mathematics. Problem-solving processes must be employed. (MNS)

Posamentier, Alfred S. – Mathematics Teacher, 1989
Proposes a new geometry curriculum for motivating middle school students. Discusses the treatment of geometry including visual justifications of geometric phenomena, examination of the properties of various common geometric figures, use of art and architecture, and inspection of geometric transformations. Eleven references are listed. (YP)

Spangler, Denise A. – Mathematics Educator, 1992
Presents eleven open-ended questions used to address students' beliefs about mathematics that were culled from a wide variety of mathematics education populations. Each question is followed by a summary of typical responses from those populations that can help teachers plan instruction and structure the classroom environment. (JJK)
