Student affairs organizations must deal with the reality that if offering high-quality and innovative programs for students is a priority, then identifying and soliciting outside funding sources is essential. If the vice president for student affairs has decided to establish a development office in the division of student affairs in a large public university, what factors should be considered? What steps should be taken? This chapter examines the challenges that are associated with initiating a fundraising effort in a student affairs division, particularly for administrators at large public universities. The authors share some thoughts about issues and concerns that they have directly experienced or heard from student affairs development colleagues from across the country.
