This manual provides school bus drivers and school officials in Oregon with material relating to safe and efficient school transportation. The guide is not intended to take the place of motor vehicle laws or school laws, but is a reference for questions that arise in connection with the school bus driver's job. Chapter 1 enumerates laws governing pupil transportation, including the Oregon Revised Statutes covering pupil transportation permitted, school bus markings, school activity vehicles, stopping and parking prohibitions, responsibilities of the Department of Education, speed laws, and license plates. Chapter 2 lists regulations governing pupil transportation administration in the following areas: illegal operation; transportation policy required; maintenance; seating; pupil instruction; equipment updating; driver training; used buses; rebuilding buses; special vehicles; and accident reporting. Chapter 3 covers Oregon Administrative Rules governing pupil transportation operation, which include bus driver training and licensing, vehicle inspection, behavior of pupils riding school buses, and regulations governing bus drivers. Advisory material is presented in chapter 4, which details such topics as additional regulations, liability, accidents, first aid, student management, emergency drills, transporting the handicapped, and information for administrators and parents.
