Towards Collaboration in Foster Care: A Training Guide.
Deighan, Mary Ellen
The curriculum presented in this training guide is seen as the foundation upon which the child welfare system can build collaboration in foster care. The first training module focuses on the significance of the parent-child relationship and the impact of separation on this relationship. It presents a general framework for understanding dysfunctional family patterns and intervention techniques. The second module concentrates on the balance between the personal and professional roles of foster families, the therapeutic skills of foster families, and the need to include foster families in the treatment team. The third and fourth modules concern the training and supervision of foster families. The last module emphasizes the importance of the preplacement and termination stages within the framework of permanency planning. Each presentation begins with a rationale explaining why the training was developed. The purpose for each training module is then described along with specific behavioral objectives and anticipated behavioral changes. The session outline next provides time frames and an explanation of the process of the training session. Materials for training, such as sample lectures, experiential exercises, and handouts for participants, appear at the end of each module. Most of the modules suggest alternative strategies for training. (RH)
