Disabilities from an Insider's Perspective
Naughton, Jacqueline
Research & Teaching in Developmental Education, v28 n1 p43-49 Fall 2011
Brian Schorr is an adult with ADHD. Dr. Gabrielle D'Amato, Ph.D., first diagnosed him with ADHD in 2003 when he was living in Ronkonkoma, New York. His main reason for seeking professional help at that time was that he was unable to understand why he had so many piles of papers in his office, why he kept forgetting things, and why he hated a part of himself. Ever since his childhood, he has had people tell him that he is stupid, not living up to his potential, and that he was hyperactive. They went over his school records, from the time he was four years old to up to his senior year of high school, and they noticed a theme developing. It was a theme of chronic procrastination, an intolerance of boredom, and easy distractibility. In this article, Schorr takes the readers on a journey through the life of someone with ADHD. He offers tips and recommendations to students for success in college classes and also tips for teachers of ADD/ADHD students.
