Challenges and Opportunities for Transforming from STEM to STEAM Education. Advances in Educational Technologies and Instructional Design (AETID) Book Series
Thomas, Kelli, Ed.; Huffman, Douglas, Ed.
IGI Global
The addition of the arts to STEM education, now known as STEAM, adds a new dimension to problem-solving within those fields, offering students tools such as imagination and resourcefulness to incorporate into their designs. However, the shift from STEM to STEAM has changed what it means for students to learn within and across these disciplines. Redesigning curricula to include the arts is the next step in preparing students throughout all levels of education. "Challenges and Opportunities for Transforming From STEM to STEAM Education" is a pivotal reference source that examines the challenges and opportunities presented in redesigning STEM education to include creativity, innovation, and design from the arts including new approaches to STEAM and their practical applications in the classroom. While highlighting topics including curriculum design, teacher preparation, and PreK-20 education, this book is ideally designed for teachers, curriculum developers, instructional designers, deans, museum educators, policymakers, administrators, researchers, academicians, and students. Chapters in this book include: (1) Designing STEAM Learning Environments (Haidee A. Jackson, James D. Basham, Kelli Thomas, and Cassandra L. Hunt); (2) Tools to Mediate Learning and Self-Assessment in a STEAM Unit of Work (Kate Thompson, Susan Narelle Chapman, and Harry Kanasa); (3) Artistic Biotechnology: A Design Thinking Platform for STEAM Praxis (Krista Marie Stith and Rachel Louise Geesa); (4) Science Cartoons (SciToons): A Model for Integrating Arts with STEM (Oludurotimi Adetunji and Roger Levine); (5) Becoming STEAM: Perspectives From School Leaders (Kelli Thomas and Douglas Huffman); (6) Making Success: Researching a School District's Integration of the Maker Movement into Its Middle and High School (Keith W. Trahan, Renata de Almeida Ramos, Jeffrey Zollars, Wei Tang, Stephanie Maietta Romero, and Cynthia A. Tananis); (7) A Laboratory for Creativity: How Youth Thrive with Design Thinking and STEAM Education (Neal Barbour and Becky Eason); (8) Black Girls STEAMing Through Dance: Inspiring STEAM Literacies, STEAM Identities, and Positive Self-Concept (Ayana Allen-Handy, Valerie Ifill, Raja Y. Schaar, Michelle Rogers, and Monique Woodard); (9) The Transdisciplinary Nature of STEAM Education: Integrating STEAM in Pre-Service Teacher Education (Douglas Huffman, Kelli Thomas, and James D.
