Supporting Transitions: Easing the Troublespots. Preventing Discipline Problems, Unit 2. [Teaching Video, Practice Video, Facilitator's Guide, and Viewer's Guide].
The numerous transitions occurring during a typical day in an early childhood setting create challenges for even the most adaptable children. As Part 2 of a 3-part video series designed to help adults working with 3- to 8-year-olds use a proactive approach to prevent discipline problems, this video training package is comprised of a Facilitators' Guide, a Viewers' Guide, and two accompanying videotapes. The focus of this second part the series is to help adults support childrens transitions rather than to just move children from one activity to another. The Facilitators' Guide summarizes the teaching videotape and presents suggested workshop exercises and group discussion activities for prior to and after viewing the videotape. Instructions for each exercise include tips for the group facilitator and suggestions for extending the exercise. The Viewers Guide provides a summary for the program and includes handouts for the workshop exercises. The 25-minute teaching videotape begins with Head Start teachers sharing their frustrations with transitions, follows up with children's responses to the same situations, and presents three techniques to help children cope more easily with transitions: rehearsing to give cues about what to expect, using focus points to remind children what to do, and keeping children engaged throughout the transition. The 25-minute practice videotape presents 3 exercises designed to help viewers learn techniques for supporting children during transitions, to increase their understanding of and empathy for children who struggle during transitions, to review and practice the 3 classroom techniques, and to stimulate thinking and discussion about other key issues affecting transition success.
