Building a Prevention Strategy: Getting Proactive-Getting Results. Preventing Discipline Problems, Unit 1. [Teaching Video, Practice Video, Facilitator's Guide, and Viewer's Guide].
In early childhood settings, an emphasis on preventing discipline problems rather than only dealing with crises as they occur will result in a calmer classroom atmosphere and more teachable time. As Part 1 of a 3-part video series designed to help adults working with 3- to 8-year-olds use a proactive approach to prevent discipline problems, this video training package is comprised of a Facilitators' Guide, a Viewers' Guide, and 2 accompanying videotapes. The focus of this first part of the series is to develop a prevention strategy in working with children. The Facilitators' Guide summarizes the teaching videotape and presents suggested workshop exercises and group discussion activities. Instructions for each exercise include tips for the group facilitator and suggestions for extending the exercise. The Viewers' Guide provides a summary for the program and includes handouts for the workshop exercises. The 27-minute teaching videotape shows how two Head Start teachers who focus on prevention consciously shift their attention away from problem behaviors and work on identifying positive behaviors that can change classroom dynamics in a 3-step process involving planning, practicing, and promoting positive behavior. The 27-minute practice videotape presents 3 exercises designed to help viewers learn how to build a prevention strategy, identify teaching techniques and experiences that help children learn and practice new behaviors, and learn to acknowledge and celebrate the targeted prosocial behaviors.
