Intended primarily for senior graduate students seriously considering a job in academia, this book begins with a discussion of available jobs in academia and how to get one. Chapter 1, "Employment Opportunities in Academia," explores the American higher educational system and the pros and cons of choosing an academic career. Chapter 2, "Getting an Academic Job," examines employment issues such as salary and job interviews. "Learning To Teach,""Organizing a Course," and "Presenting a Course," Chapters 3, 4, and 5, respectively, cover the teaching part of the job, with some theory and discussion on organizing a course, tips on lecturing, and a discussion of alternative teaching techniques. Chapter 6, "Meeting Your First Class," explores first-time fears and what to expect in the first class session. Chapter 7, "Testing and Evaluation," discusses some underlying theory of evaluation of students by testing and discusses the evaluation of professors by students. Professors' responsibilities as an advisor and mentor to students are explained in Chapter 8, "Advising and Mentoring." Chapters 9 and 10 "Research and Scholarship," and "Publishing," address choosing a research topic, finding funding, and how to get your research published. Chapter 11, "Getting Tenure," discusses tenure and the actual procedure for getting tenure. Chapters 12 and 13, "Academic Integrity" and "Getting Fired," relate to the professor's ethical responsibilities, first to maintain academic integrity in the university system, and second on how not to get fired from a tenured job. Chapter 14,"The Academic Career" provides information on managing an academic career. An appendix contains supplementary readings. (EMS)
