Rabow, Jerome; Chin, Tiffani; Fahimian, Nima
This manual encourages students to act as volunteer tutors. Chapter 1, "Attitudes, Anxieties, and Expectations," discusses normal fears and anxieties and unconditional acceptance. Chapter 2, "Building Relationships," looks at making connections, building trust, motivating students to learn, going beyond academics, and establishing boundaries. Chapter 3, "Teaching Techniques," discusses getting students interested and involved, easing student fears, letting students lead, challenging students, and recognizing student ploys. Chapter 4, "Race, Gender, Class, and Background Differences," looks at anticipating differences before the relationship begins, riding the roller coaster relationship, and overcoming differences. Chapter 5, "Other Adults: Parents, Teachers, and Administrators," includes attitudes and involvement with other adults and what students can do as tutors. Chapter 6, "Good-Byes: Ending the Tutorial Relationship," focuses on difficulties in saying good-bye, harmful ways of saying good-bye, how to say good-bye, gifts, talking about the experience, and learning experiences. Twenty-five final pointers for tutors are included. Each chapter contains recommended readings. (SM)
