This book is designed to help teachers understand the basic methodology of counseling and sensitize teachers to the basic ideas and skills that are involved in responding to students' interpersonal, social, and emotional needs. The book helps teachers create helping relationships with students, assess and diagnose problems, use current therapy techniques, resolve critical classroom incidents, conduct effective parent-student conferences, adapt counseling skills to cultural differences, and communicate effectively with counseling professionals. There are seven chapters: (1) "Adjusting to Multiple Roles," (2) "Understanding the Process of Helping," (3) "Assessing Children's Problems," (4) "Developing Skills of Helping," (5) "Helping Strategies in Groups," (6) "Communicating with Parents," and (7) "Counseling Effectively with Other Professionals."
