Theatre for Young Audiences: Around the World in 21 Plays.
Swortzell, Lowell, Ed.
The 21 plays in this international anthology for young people range through the classic, modern, and contemporary periods. Several of the plays are translations from other languages, and all begin with an explanatory introduction and contain basic stage directions. The anthology contains plays by Moliere, August Strindberg, Gertrude Stein, Langston Hughes, Israel Horovitz, Lawrence Yep, and others, and also includes traditional material, such as "Jack Juggler" (the first play ever written for children to perform), and a British version of "Punch and Judy." An afterword provides some historical background about plays written for children and suggests that today's plays written for young audiences offer an "accurate, compelling reflection of the world in which we live..." The anthology concludes with a list of additional plays recommended for young people. (NKA)
