Mainstreaming Young Children: A Training Series for Child Care Providers. Student Handbook, and Instructor Manual.
Wesley, Patricia W.
This curriculum includes both an instructor's manual and a student handbook and is intended to be used in community colleges to provide preservice and inservice training about mainstreaming of young children with disabilities to child care providers. The curriculum is planned to be a 4 credit-hour course presented in eight modules. Each module employs instructional methods that may include interactive small group activities, lectures, group discussion, role play, audiovisual presentations, handouts, and assignments. Transparencies are provided for each module. Modules address the following areas: (1) historical background and purpose of mainstreaming; (2) considering the child with special needs within the context of normal development and developmental delays; (3) working with families; (4) the preschool environment and ways to support children's play; (5) curriculum planning and responsive teaching skills; (6) promoting language development; (7) guiding behavior; and (8) answering questions about disabilities. The student handbook includes such resources as self-evaluation checklists, charts of normal child development milestones, outlines of the major provisions of relevant federal legislation, guidelines for family-centered services, specific effective communication skills, a health and safety checklist, guidelines for scheduling, suggestions for helping children with specific disabilities, and sources of further information for each module.
