A framework for New York communities interested in establishing drug-free school zones is provided in this guidebook. Chapters 1-4 present background information to familiarize the reader with drug-free school zones, relevant alcohol and drug abuse policies and concepts, and school/community partnerships. Chapters 5 and 6 offer guidelines for the implementation of drug-free school zones, such as strategies for prevention, enforcement, community education, and agency involvement and coordination. Chapter 7 outlines strategies and activities that foster community support. Two figures illustrate action plan components and the action plan development process. Appendices contain the Drug Free School and Communities Act of 1986 (sections 5122 and 5145), New York State penal law, lists of statewide and other resources, and a sample resolution.
