Make the Most of Your Opportunities: A Guide to Postsecondary Education for Adults with Handicaps.
American Council on Education, Washington, DC. HEATH Resource Center.
This guide is designed to help disabled students of all ages who are thinking about continuing their education after high school. It contains practical suggestions to assist in managing the daily challenges that arise. The guide focuses on expressing one's needs, being open to change, practicing self-advocacy, planning ahead, looking for the best school, and checking admissions requirements. A section on services available for disabled students at some institutions of postsecondary education describes pre-registration, flexibility in class scheduling and course requirements, extended time, test modifications, notetakers, interpreter services, orientation for new students, and physical access. Services such as vocational rehabilitation, support groups, and Centers for Independent Living are also described. Procedures are outlined for making arrangements to receive necessary services. A list of four publications and five organizational resources is included. (JDD)
