The Student's Choice. Dropout Prevention Series.
Lankard, Bettina A.
This student book is part of a series of program materials for a school-based intervention process to help at-risk students stay in school. This book, a related instructor's guide, and a viodetape entitled "A Time of Choices" comprise the classroom component of this set of materials focusing on awareness and commitment. The purpose of the program is to help students succeed in school and beyond. Section A: "Potential" helps students learn about themselves and their chances for success. Topics include attitude, aspirations, achievements, activities, and autonomy. Each topic has these parts: a questionnaire, analysis of answers, discussion, and plan. Section B: "Experiences" helps students recognize how the skills and knowledge they acquire in school are used on the job. It contains four interviews with young working people who tell what they studied and learned in school and what they do on the job. The jobs are secretarial, electronics, office clerk, and auto mechanic. Each interview is followed by questions and discussion. Section C: "Success" involves watching a videotape that shows 10th-grade youth in various decision-making situations. Students then decide what decisions the characters should make. Worksheets are provided. (YLB)
