Indiana Studies: Hoosier History, Government, and People. Unit IV: Indiana Enters the Twentieth Century.
Barger, Harry D.; And Others
Unit 4 of the six-unit Indiana history series designed to be taught in Indiana secondary schools covers the years from 1880 to 1929, from President Garfield's assassination to the inauguration of President Hoover. Each chapter is divided into short sections that describe events and is followed by questions to reinforce the learning. The many changes taking place in Indiana during these years are highlighted in Chapter 1. Between the years of 1880 to 1929 Indiana became urbanized and industrialized. Due to Indiana's abundant natural resources, technological advances, and improved transportation, the state rapidly developed industry. Chapter 2 describes the centennial celebration of 1916. Chapter 3 discusses the impact of World War I on Indiana, and the activities engaged in by Hoosiers to make the war effort a success. By 1930, Indiana state government had grown tremendously and efforts were made to make government more efficient. A discussion of the "Roaring Twenties" in Indiana and the forces leading to the organization of the Ku Klux Klan are provided. (SM)
